1. World Climate Zones

What is the difference between weather and climate?

Weather describes the day-to-day conditions of the atmosphere. Weather can change quickly - one day it can be dry and sunny and the next day it may rain.
Climate describes average weather conditions over longer periods and over large areas.

The table below shows the world climatic zones.

2. Factors that influence climate

external image clim_003.gif
Four factors can influence climate:
  • Latitude: The distance from the equator. Places near the equator are hotter than places near the poles.
  • Altitude: The height above the sea level. Places at higher altitude are usually cooler and have more rainfall than places at a lower altitude.
  • The relief: Changes in ground level. Mountains can stop sea air from reaching inland areas and clouds must go higher, which causes precipitation.
  • The distance from the sea: Coastal places are cooler in summer and warmer in winter than inland areas.
